CBX750 starter motor

Bought an old CBX750 -84,
as usual when buying used stuff, strange if not very odd issues can be hidden, especially when history reveals approxmately 24! previous owners.
Got it cheap, needed a trainer bike I did not need to worry scratching up.

It had a bit of a sluggish starter motor, so as summer ended i decided to have a look at it.

Initial investigation

Nice mess.

Found a "fuse"

Connector melted, not ok to use anymore..

looks like it is time to replace it.

Teardown of starter motor

4x brushes in bad shape

New brushes need some modification

I could only source these loacally, but they cann easily be filed down to fit

Filed o fit

Makeshift lathe, commutator polished

only spun against paper to get rid of the worst, it is pretty worn after 35 years...

Soldered connections

Seems to be solderable.

First thing to note is that it is not optimal to solder things that are
subject to closed environment and high temperatures.
Additionally, the current in stalled out condition could reach 100A+.
Im adding some extra metal over the soldered joints to dissipate the heat.

filed brushes in place.

U clamps over soldered joints.

The new starter relay is good for 200A.

Generic 12V 200A starter relay

Crimped connections

Replaced all soldered connectors.

All new wires crimped, and covered in heatshrink filled with glue, hopefully it will last longer.

Final

New relay and wires in place.
starting up the engine
