Delidding a GF114

The problem

GTX560 had started to show signs of temperature inconsistencies,
neither new heat paste or upgraded cooler altered the temperature spikes.

Figured that a possible fix could be delid and a beefier cooler.

The cards

Palit GTX560 1024Mb TDP 150W

Really poorly designed cooling solution on this card..

I found a XFX heatpipe cooler from a HD4870 graphics card
that was watercooling converted.

Tools

Scraper blades and isopropyl alcohol.
thermal paste.

The process

Removal the heatspreader (IHS) needs to be done carefully.

Die hiding under IHS.

Drowning the edges in isopropyl 100%
for a while before inserting blades.

Two blades carefully inserted

Four blades carefully inserted.

With blades inserted a gap starts to creep open, adding some more isopropyl alcohol as the gap widens. Dont know if it helped but it felt like it ; P.

Thermal paste cleaning

Once loose it was pretty obvious the thermal paste had next to no function, hard as rock and dried completely.

Scraping needed

Another use for the blades

Wonder what that weird spot was?

Time for isopropyl alcohol

Squeaky clean

Testfit for cooler

IHS removal lowers the die contact standoff.
easily fixed by bending the mounts a little.

Fits nicely.

I added a NTC thermal underrun shut-off
more or less it shuts of the fan (slowly)
if the graphic heatsink goes below 60°C ~ish

I loosely followed this guide

wrapped in heat shrink tubing.

I could tell it made a difference
too bad i forgot to log temperatures before/after.
