Toyota Starlet 4E-FE engine mounts
Trouble driving
Severe engine shaking when trying to smoothly drive in 1st gear at clutch
biting point.
Most
likely there is no life left in the engine mounts.
Hopefully this is the case since this Toyota has not shown any leaks around the bell haousing. Never had a replacement of the clutch done.
and it is only done approx 16000km.
This car has Three engine mounts.
Setting up
Good to have is aproper engine hoist, but that's something I do not own.
Two woodblocks and exhaust clamp will do fine, it is only be one mount of
at a time.
Floor jack under engine
Iron bar as engine hoist.
Removing RHS top mount
Fastened with three bolts and one hard to reach nut.
Two ground eyelets
are bolted on the mount as well.
Lower nut removed.
Remove GND eyelet and bolts.
All loosened, removal time.
Lift servo oil reservoir for clearance.
Comparison, RHS top mount
Ordered base on car model and engine type, still the part was wider than the original.
Lyckily this was only the inner tube via slight offset.
New vs old.
Cutting to size.
New width ok.
Installation in reverse, unto the next one.
Removing LHS mount
Mount bracket is fastened with three bolts on the side of the gearbox.
Needs to be removed to have clearence for mounting housing removal.
Two ground eyelets
are bolted on the mount as well.
luckily I was to remove most forward bolt without issue.
Front LHS bolt.
Locating bolts, 3x on gearbox.
Removed the bolts, they werenot threading out easily, most likely due to steel
and aluminium not working good together in salty environment.
Gently threading in and out ,carefully untill they loosened in the threads.
managed to get all out without damage.
wirebrushed the bolts and cleaned the holes.
Cleaned bolts, threadcheck.
Comparison, LHS mount
no issues detected.
New vs old.
Double check width.
Rear engine mount
The rusting of exhaust mounts was not a pleasant sight, will have to adress it.
Sway bar bushing mounts needs to be loosened as well the stabilizer bars connected
to engine mount bracket chassie side.
Severly rusted cat. mounts.
Sway bar bushings, removal needed.
Unfortuneltly the bolt that goes through the rubber mount inner tube would not budge.
This reulted in me being forced to remove gearbox bracket with engine mount
chassie bracket.
The bolt holes needed cleaning with threadchaser du to oxidition, worse than that of the LHS bracket.
bolts cleaned and threads checked.
Needed some heating and WD-40 to get things looesened without badly damaging any components.
Time for WD-40 and heat.
Before installation, cleaning is needed.
Clean mounting position.
Comparison, LHS mount
no issues detected.
New vs old.
Attached rear mount.
Bolt in place.
Fising the exhaust mount
Not really an option replaceing the entire system, everything is old and will brake.
going for a new universal mount fix by repurposing a biltema clamp meant for Volvo 850.
Some bending needed.
Biltema '98-020 for Volvo 850
First bend for width.
Second bend.
New mount in place.
Final
Was there any need of replacing them?
Bending the rubber supports clearly shows they were well past due for replacement.
Replacement necessary.
