VW Sharan 2015
Clockspring repaired

The steering wheel controls stopped responding after one really cold night, also the airbag light came on.

More than likely condensation and moisture build-up froze and jammed the cable strip inside resulting in torn wires.

Special tools is not necessary not countin OBD scanner, but here are some recommendations.

Tools

* Various torx bits
* Silicon grease
* A medium wrench
* 12 point M12 bit for steering wheel
* Soldering iron
* "blue" threadlock
* Elastic glue
* VAG scanning tool (OBD)
* A lot of patience : P

(The primary camera i use lost the pictures, so I had to use the ones i could recover from mine and my friends mobile phones and refs. I could locate on the internet)

Good YT guide - very similar

Teardown

Before anything, center the steering, wheels pointing straight ahead.

Remove the top cover above the steering wheel. only clips.

Pop out the airbag and disconnect the yellow connector by lifting the lock tab.

The airbag is held with springs you can push aside with flat screwdriver.
I chose not to sit in front of it and wore ear protection when disconnecting / removing it -better safe than sorry...

The bolt is locktighted, put tension on the steering wheel
and knock the wrench in the opposite direction.

M12 12-point

NOTE! mark the splined shaft and the steering wheel so that you can put it back as it was.

Half the clockspring was stuck to the steering wheel.
The connector did not release from it.

Badly torn wires

Remove the clockspring

Unit removed.

Hard creases.

Soldering of wires

I cleaned and resoldered with
small pieces of single strand copper wire as extensions

I degreased the cable strip, glued it and the locking bar in place with some elastic glue.

I lost the image of the final result
So here is a poor shot from the video..

Reinstall clockspring unit

I lost the assembly photos..
-If you are doing the assembly, plese check out this video
dont forget to add silicone grease to keep out the water.

Before installing you need to center the clockspring unit.
Gently turn it furthest to the left then count number of turns a bit before what my video below shows.
In my case approx 2 turns.

Video show when it's turned to far

Unit reinstalled

Replace the steering wheel according to the marks you hopefully made, clean and add loctite to the bolt.
The bolt should actually be replaced, but with threadlock i do not see
a need for that.
Approx 30Nm + 90°

Or just tighten it enough not to break it.

You might need to reset the airbag light, we solved it with OBDeleven
the tool is not free.

It has now held up for approximately 3 years and still working, would say the repair was a success.
