LED instead of tubes

Fluorescent tube decided to die, in the process killed the socket.

Charred and broken

Heat and age bares its teeth.

Seems the other side was close call also.

LEDs found on Ebay

Found some generic 3W LEDs.
Claimed 90-110lm and 6500K .

All pieces needed, 8x LED + 1.8Ω + 4x LM317

Some math:

1,25V / 700mA = 1.8Ω
1,25V * 700mA = 0,875W

i.e. 1W resistor @ 1.8Ω

LM317 needs 2V overhead, atleast...
approx 3-4V drop / LED

a 12V supply should work fine..

A pair of LEDs can be stringed in series.

A supply that can handle 4*700mA
12V 5A.

Prepping for LEDs

JB weld is used to secure the LEDs to the shroud.
The glue is thermally conductive(somewhat)
and the shroud is aluminium.

Placed all components, the light does not come in contact with water vapor.

Looks ok.

Final result

A tad warmer than the Fluorescent tube was.
